Student-Athletes Team Up with Project Life and Be the Match

A total of 45 student-athletes from nine teams volunteered together to put on the three-day event
Last week the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) teamed up with Project Life and Be the Match to give UofL students the chance to save lives. Project Life and Be the Match are organizations working together to increase the bone marrow donor registry to help those with bone cancers and blood diseases. A total of 45 student-athletes from nine teams volunteered together to put on the three-day event. Over the three days there were six drives where the SAAC added 130 potential donors to the bone marrow donor registry.
Â
Tori Gabor, a member of women's soccer team and the SAAC community outreach chair, found the experience meaningful. "I was introduced to Project Life and Be the Match in North Carolina at the ACC SAAC Conference. I knew that every person we got registered was one more person that could potentially save someone's life."
Â
The process of registering for the bone marrow registry involves light paper work and cheek swab. Those on the registry, if ever matched with a person in need, have the opportunity to donate bone marrow and save someone's life. Bone marrow is used to treat diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma and sickle cell anemia.
Â
Sydnie Swartwood, a field hockey student-athlete, found the campus-wide event inspiring. "Working with the Project Life has been so rewarding. I volunteered with the drives, and I thought it was really cool to see that UofL students were so interested and willing to support the cause and make a difference in the world."
Â
The SAAC looks forward to continuing their relationship with Project Life and Be the Match to bring more drives to UofL's campus. Dorian Edwards, Project Life Campus Coordinator, was on UofL's campus during the drives and sees a hopeful future with UofL. "Project Life has been honored to partner with the student athletes at the University of Louisville. It was great to see how energetic, and dedicated they were to inform and register their peers to become potential donors…we can't wait to save more lives with the Cardinals next year."
