Men's Tennis Defeats Georgia State 4-0

Cards improve to 7-3 on the season
ATLANTA – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated host Georgia State 4-0 Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (7-3) will travel to Evanston, Ill., for a matchup against Northwestern on Feb. 18.
Â
"We enjoyed the pressure today," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "The indoor courts allowed the fans to be right next to the courts and it was an echo chamber. It was so loud you could hardly concentrate. It was a jungle. I told the guys be the biggest animals in this jungle and they were."
Â
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early with doubles wins on courts one and two. The 18th-ranked duo of junior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and sophomore Parker Wynn defeated Andrei Andruktou and Quentin Coulaud 6-3 to give Louisville an early advantage. At the two spot, juniors Federico Gomez and Brandon Lancaster beat Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Duarte 7-6(12-10) to seal the point. On court three, senior Nicolas Rouanet and junior George Hedley and Georgia State's Giles Hussey and Hevin Huynh were knotted at 6-6 when their match was suspended.
Â
"The doubles point was going well on courts one and three," said Ecarma. "Parker Wynn and Kougoucheff were up 5-2 and George/Nico were up 5-0 then the jungle took over. We lost complete control on the point. No. 2 doubles was down 2-4 and No. 3 doubles went from 5-0 to 5-5. No. 1 doubles wins 6-3, then Brandon/Fede fought back to get it into a tie-breaker. Then George and Nico got into a tiebreaker. After four match points Federico and Brandon won 12-10. That only excited the crowd even more."
Â
In singles action, Wynn defeated Quentin Coulaud 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to put the Cards up 2-0. Gomez registered a 6-0, 7-5 win over Hussey at the four-spot. Morin-Kougoucheff's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Andrukhou clinched the match for the Cardinals.
Â
"Parker won our first singles match," said Ecarma. "Then Federico won in two close sets. Kougoucheff was not feeling well and got down 0-3. After a heart-to-heart talk, he willed himself to some of the gutsiest tennis he has played all year and clinched the match. With three 7-0 wins and today's 4-0 win, we have won 25 points in a row and regained the momentum we had earlier in the season. Georgia State is good. They got an at-large bid to the NCAAs last season and already beat LSU this season."
