Black crews win four of six races against Red crews
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team opened the 2017-18 season Saturday morning with the 12th annual Red & Black Regatta at the G. Garvin Brown III Rowing Center at Waterfront Park. In the Cardinals' lone home event of the year, fans and parents were able to watch six intra-squad scrimmage races, as well as an alumnae race to close the session.
The morning event opened with remarks from head coach Derek Copeland, who welcomed parents and spectators with a preview of the season and a refresher on how the sport operates. Along with Copeland's message, Louie the Cardinal and the Cardinal Pride Pep Band helped spread team spirit at the event.
In the races, the intra-squad teams were divided on a variety of categories, including upperclassmen versus lowerclassmen and American rowers against their international teammates. Overall, the black crews were strong, taking four of the six races from the red boats.Â
"The girls that were novices previously, they had a boat out there today. That was really good, and it was fun to see them together," said Copeland. "Obviously, they're juniors and seniors now, but it's fun to see how far they've come because just a few short years ago, they learned how to row."
In the alumnae race, former Cardinal rowers were separated into red and black crews, giving them another opportunity to compete for UofL. For some of the rowers like 2013 alumna Katya Brudner, it was a taxing, but exciting opportunity.
"We lost, but the five blisters were worth it," said Brudner following the race.
"It was really fun to have the alumni back," said Copeland. "It reminds me that the rowing is much sharper in that group because they have so many more years of experience than our current group. So, it just reminds me where we're headed with the program."
Following the races, the Cardinals hosted a cookout the rowers and their families, as well as all spectators in attendance.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 20-21 in Cambridge, Mass. The Cards' second varsity eight crew will compete on Saturday, followed by the varsity eight boat on Sunday.Â
