UofL student-athletes participated in 86 different service opportunities in September
Throughout the month of September, Student-Athletes at the University of Louisville amassed a total of 708 hours of community service. Nearly 200 student-athletes participated in 86 different service opportunities for 34 different organizations. This amounts to about 3.5 hours per student athlete that participated in community service this month. The leading teams were the all-girl Cheerleading Squad and the softball team with an average of four hours per person.
Â
Cardinal student-athletes took part in several major events featured throughout September that contributed to all of these hours. Two of the largest events that student-athletes participated in were the Kidney Walk and the St. Jude's Walk & Bike to Beat Cancer, which emphasized health and wellness here in the city of Louisville.
Â
Junior Celene Funke from the softball team said, "We love getting the chance to give back to the community that has given us so much."
Â
The student-athletes on campus recognize the importance of volunteering in the community,
Â
"This fall we have cheered on those at Bike to Beat Cancer, played beep baseball with the visually impaired, danced with elementary school students at their annual walkathon, and have gotten involved with blessings in a backpack where we loaded up bags of food for a child's weekend," said Funke. "We are so lucky to get the opportunity to be positive role models for the youth in our community!"
