Cards beat Kentucky and Western Kentucky to wrap up the 2018-19 fall season
The University of Louisville softball team wrapped up the 2018-19 fall season with a pair of wins over in-state rivals Kentucky and Western Kentucky on Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
"I was pretty pleased with what we did today," said UofL head coach Holly Aprile. "I think we did a really nice job on the mound overall, we pitched pretty well. We were a little behind in some of our counts in the second game, but we battled through it."
Â
Louisville vs. Kentucky
In their first game of the day, the Cardinals rallied late to beat Kentucky. In the game, the teams played through three scoreless innings before the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead behind Alex Martens' leadoff solo home run in the fourth.
Â
Louisville answered in the home half of the inning when senior Sidney Melton singled, proceeded to steal second and third and scored on an error.
Â
The Wildcats pulled ahead 2-1 with an unearned run in the sixth. Autumn Humes singled and pinch-runner Kennedy Cowden eventually crossed the plate on an error. Â
Â
The Cards countered with a two-run home run from junior Caitlin Ferguson. Melton singled to set up Ferguson's third homer of the fall season which brought the score to 3-2.
Â
Sophomore Danielle Watson got the start and struck out six in 4.0 innings. Senior Megan Hensley fanned three in 3.0 innings of relief. Ferguson went 2-for2 with two RBIs to lead Louisville at the plate.
Â
Louisville vs. Western Kentucky
In their final game of the fall season, the Cardinals jumped to and early lead in the first inning when sophomore Maddy Newman tripled and came home on sophomore Kyra Snyder's RBI hit.
Â
Louisville tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. Junior Celene Funke led off with a hit and scored on Taylor Roby's double. Freshman Charley Butler tripled Roby home to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
Â
Roby got the start in the circle and teamed with Snyder for a four-hit shutout. Funke led the Cards with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate.
Â
"In this game [against Western Kentucky] we got a lot of hits, but didn't score a lot of runs off of those hits," said Aprile. "I was really pleased with our at-bats and I thought we played good defense as well. We communicated well."
Â
The Cardinals will return to action in February 2019. The complete schedule will be released on GoCards.com in the coming weeks.
