Cardinals join field of 12 schools at Indiana State
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following a solid opening performance at the University of Tennessee, the University of Louisville cross country teams remain on the road this weekend with the John McNichols Cross Country Invitational at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind.
The event will commence with the women's 5K race at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race at 10 a.m. The Cardinals will be joined by 237 runners from 11 other institutions at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
Last week, the No. 28 Cardinal women's team began their season with a dominating performance at the Tennessee Dual, taking the race, 18-41, with six finishers in the top seven. Sophomore Dorcas Wasike earned her second career victory with a time of 17:26.07. Teammate Aurilla Wilson followed shortly behind with a personal-best time of 17:31.01, one of three Cards setting a personal-best 5K time in the event. At McNichols, Louisville will be challenged by No. 3 Michigan and a regionally-ranked Indiana State squad.
In the men's race, freshman Albert Kosgei will attempt to follow up his first-place time of 20:17.42 in the 4-mile race at Tennessee. The Cardinals placed two additional runners, Daniel Fleace and Julien Magallanes, in the top 10, but the Volunteers prevailed overall with a 22-35 score. The men's 8K field at McNichols features competitors from No. 28 Illinois and regionally-ranked sides from Butler and Indiana State.
Following Saturday's invitational, Louisville will return home for four of their final five events of the season. The Cardinals will next race in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 30 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
