April 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Cards win 4-2 and are set to face Wake Forest
The  No. 14 seeded University of Louisville women's tennis team took the doubles point and then held on to win three singles matches upsetting No. 11 seed Syracuse 4-2 at the 2017 ACC Tennis Championship Wednesday afternoon in Rome, Ga. The Cardinals will play No. 6 seed Wake Forest tomorrow at 4 p.m. Â
Â
"This was a really good college match," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "Every court was really tight and we were fortunate to win. I lost a couple of years off my life with this match but it was a lot of fun. I am really happy for Aleksandra (Mally), she has been through so much and for her to clinch the match was huge for her. Also Olivia (Boesing) got a big win for us today as well, she's been up and down this year but stepped up when we needed her. It was definitely a team win, we needed everyone to contribute today to get the win."
Â
The match began when Aleksandra Mally and Ariana Rodriguez defeated Nicole Mitchell and Maria Tritou 6-1 at No. 3. The doubles point was clinched by the Cardinals' No. 1 pair of Abbie Pahz and Mariana Humberg, who held on to win 7-5.
Â
The Orange struck first in singles and tied the match when their No. 2 singles player Gabriela Knutson defeated Elle Stokes 6-3, 6-2. UofL's Abbie Pahz scored for the Cardinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Maria Tritou. Syracuse tied the score at two when Libi Mesh defeated Tiffany Huber 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.
Senior Olivia Boesing scored the third point for the Cardinals when she survived a 7-6 first set and then won 6-4 in the second ove Dina Hegab at No. 6. Louisville got the winning point from Aleksandra Mally, who won her first set 6-3 before dropping the second 4-6 and then winning the third 7-6 (2) for the win.
Â
The Cardinals advance to play No. 6 seed Wake Forest Thursday at 4 p.m. UofL fell to the Demon Deacons 4-2 in the regular season.
