Cards Defeat IUPUI 7-0 in Regular Season Finale
April 23, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Cards finish season with a 20-8 overall record
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville's 39th-ranked men's tennis team did not lose a set on its way to a 7-0 win over visiting IUPUI Sunday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals wrap up the regular season with a 20-7 overall record.
"We're very happy with the win, I thought the guys really responded well," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were a little bit down after that North Carolina match (earlier today), I felt like we didn't play our best tennis… So to have tonight's match, to play again… it was good to get back out there and play. The guys responded with a really good doubles point and six good singles wins. It was good for us to get this win and feel confident going into the ACC tournament."
The sophomore duo of George Hedley and Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff defeated Jose Calero and Mikel Saavedra 6-1 on No. 3 to start the doubles action. At the two-spot, juniors Ciro Lampasas and Nicolas Rouanet clinched the doubles point after defeating Bradley Luetschwager and David Beasley 6-4. The 47th-ranked pair of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn defeated Kyle Whittaker and Jac Newis 7-6 (7-4) to sweep doubles play.
The singles action was started with a Clement Filho 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mikel Saavedra at No. 5. Ciro Lampasas followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grant Weaver at the six-spot. On court four, Brandon Lancaster defeated Bradley Luetschwager 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match. Parker Wynn defeated Jac Newis 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 to push his team-best singles record to 39-10. George Hedley was victorious at No. 3 defeating David Beasley 6-3, 6-2. Nicolas Rouanet clinched the 7-0 win at the two-spot with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jose Calero.
The Cardinals will now prepare for the ACC Championship in Rome, Ga., which starts on Wednesday, April 26. Louisville earned the No. 7 seed in the tournament and will face tenth-seeded Notre Dame in the first round Thursday at 10 a.m.
