Cards pick up fifth straight win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The win gave the Cards their fifth straight victory and moved them to 16-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Â
In doubles action, Virginia Tech took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. No. 22 Sean Donohue and Parker Wynn fell to Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard 6-2 on No. 1. Jason Kros and Feddy Mesmer defeated Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Ciro Lampasas 6-4 on court three.
Â
In singles action, Wynn defeated Korsgaard 6-0, 6-3 on No. 3 to tie the match.
Â
The Hokies countered with a win on court six where Mesmer defeated Donohue 6-2, 6-3 to put Virginia Tech back on top 2-1.
Â
Louisville rallied off four straight points to secure the win, starting with Brandon Lancaster's 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win over Kros at No. 5 to even the score at 2-2. The Cards took the lead for good when Kougoucheff defeated 82nd-ranked Corbett 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 on No. 1. The match was decided on court four when Hedley beat Alexandre Ribeiro 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Rouanet gave the Cards a 5-2 victory after defeating Harper 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 on No. 2.
Â
"This was a typical Louisville versus Virginia Tech match," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma following the victory. "That's a program that we've had more 4-3 matches, more close matches with historically than anyone else in the country. It's 3-2 with the last two courts in the third set. Both teams just work so hard with talented players and experienced coaches. We were just fortunate to win both of those third-set matches. I was really pleased that these guys stepped up."
Â
Louisville returns to action tonight as they play host to Xavier at 6:00 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
