Cards move to 14-4 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Duquesne 7-0 in the first match of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards (14-4) will take on Arkansas Pine Bluff Friday evening at 5 p.m.
Â
The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. Junior Nicolas Rouanet and sophomore George Hedley gave Louisville an early edge with a 6-1 decision against Tim Kane and Jared Isaacs at No. 2. The Dukes evened the tally on court one where Adam Blasinsky and Chris Corrao upset the 22nd ranked duo of senior Sean Donohue and freshman Parker Wynn. The first point of the match came down to the No. 3 spot where junior Ciro Lampasas and Michael Quang took a 5-1 lead and withstood a rally by Andrew Ong and Drew Akins to prevail 6-4 and give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Â
In singles action, freshman Clement Filho quickly added to Louisville's lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Corrao at No. 6. Hedley's 6-1, 6-1 decision against Akins at No. 3 made the score 3-0. On court one, Rouanet defeated Blazinsky 6-3, 6-1 to notch the decisive fourth point in the win.
Â
Sophomore Brandon Lancaster beat Jared Isaacs 6-4, 6-2 at the four-spot to increase the lead to 6-0 and Donohue's 7-6 (4), 6-4 win against Ong on court five brought the final score to 7-0.
Â
"I was really impressed with Duquesne, they came out fighting and made the doubles point really tricky," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We spent a lot of time this week working on Nos. 2, 3 and 4 in doubles and they really came through this time. There were some tough matches in singles, but what I really like to see is that these guys are really working on what we need them to do… I saw all of the players implement something new that they usually don't do and it was working for them today. I was really pleased with their ability to transform as players."
