December 21, 2017 | Beyond the Buzzer
Students from 10 area schools participated in the annual program
Students from 10 different elementary schools celebrated their completion of the Louie's Fit Friends Program at the Louisville women's basketball game on Saturday, December 9. In attendance were students from Bowen, Chenoweth, and Greathouse-Shyrock Elementary, who logged the most activity minutes in their grade out of participating schools and were later recognized on the court.
Â
Louie's Fit Friends is an annual program in the fall that strives to promote healthy and active lifestyles to elementary students. Students are challenged to log at least 30 minutes of activity a day during a two-week period. Students can log a variety of activities to count towards their 30 minutes, from sports practices to playing tag. Louie, along with UofL student-athletes, mentors the participants and encourages them to achieve the goal of 420 minutes through videos and school visits.
Â
Monica Negron, coordinator of the event is enthusiastic about the future of this program. "I am excited to see how we can continue to grow our relationships with the local youth. Sport can be used in so many ways to create change. It's great being able to use our platform to inspire younger generations to live a healthy lifestyle."
Â
This year, students collectively logged over 143,300 minutes of activity and hopefully will surpass that total next year. Â For more information about Louie's Fit Friends, please visit www.gocards.com/LFF.
