Cards improve to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in ACC play
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 14 Wake Forest 2-0 Friday evening at Kentner Stadium.

"This was easily our best performance of the year," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Our coaching staff is so proud of the team tonight with the execution of the game plan and the intensity at which we played."

Seniors Lotta Kahlert and Lizzie Gittens each scored a goal and sophomore Ayeisha McFerran posted two saves as the Cardinals improve to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in ACC play. Wake Forest drops to 4-4 (0-3 ACC).

The teams played through 30 scoreless minutes in the first half before the Cardinals broke through with their first goal of the contest. Kahlert sent a shot past Wake Forest goalkeeper Cat O'Connor and into the top of the cage for her sixth goal of the season to give Louisville a 1-0 lead. Â

The Cards took the lead into halftime after outshooting the Demon Deacons 10-0 and holding a 2-0 advantage in corners.

With just under eight minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals added an insurance goal after being awarded a penalty corner. Senior Erin McCrudden got the corner started and junior Marigrace Ragsdale provided the stop for graduate student Lizzie Gittens who connected on her fourth goal of the season to make the score 2-0.

The Cardinals fired off 15 shots in the game, eight of them landing on goal as O'Connor posted six saves. The Louisville defense held Wake Forest to three shots in the game while collected its fourth shutout of the season.

Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Ayeisha McFerran (7-1)registered two stops in the contest.

"I usually can find things that we need to work on after a game and tonight I will have to watch video to find those pieces to improve," said Sowry. "Our leadership came to play and they had a very impressive supporting cast for 70 minutes of play." Â Â

UofL returns to action on Sunday when the Cardinals visit Appalachian State for a 12 p.m. start.
