Eleni Georgiafandis and Tim Kubel represented Louisville at the ACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee summer meeting
Eleni Georgiafandis (volleyball) and Tim Kubel (men's soccer) represented the University of Louisville at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) summer meeting which was held July 15-16 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Led by ACC Director of Student-Athlete Programs and Compliance Shamaree Brown, the two-day meeting brings together SAAC representatives from each conference member institution. The committee regularly convenes four times per year - twice via teleconference and twice in person. During this year's July summer meeting, the group shared best practices and discussed topics such as: NCAA student-athlete time-demands, conference-wide service initiatives, and conference championships. Student-athletes also attempted to showcase their other talents and creative side during the painting group activity.
"Throughout the weekend, we were educated on numerous pieces of new legislation that are being processed currently," said Georgiafandis. "We also discussed different ways to impact our school and community as a whole and I think that is what Tim and I are most excited to bring back to the UofL SAAC. It was awesome to be a part of such an incredible group of student-athlete leaders."
The primary purpose of the in-person meetings is to allow representatives to come together as a group to set goals and discuss priorities for the ACC SAAC. The gathering serves as an opportunity for student-athletes to engage in dialogue about legislative and governance issues with ACC administration. The meetings focused heavily on the current student-athlete time-demands. The most recent discussion included the Flex 21-time management plan, examining the definition of Countable Athletic and Related Activities (CARA), and conference sponsored white papers. SAAC members were encouraged to work with their coaches, compliance directors, and sport administrators to create a simulated plan to meet the needs outlined in the proposal.
"It was a great experience to interact and discuss very important topics at the ACC SAAC meetings with fellow student-athletes from ACC schools," said Kubel.
