The University of Louisville spirit groups won three national championships in the first day of finals at the NCA and NDA National Championships at Daytona Beach's Ocean Center Bandshell.
The Ladybirds won the Dance Team competition with a score of 9.705 beating runnerup NC State's 9.550. The Large Co-Ed team posted a 97.20, edging Oklahoma State's 94.30. The All-Girl Squad boarded a dazzling 95.68, beating Oklahoma State (91.20).
"I am elated for all of the amazing kids in our spirit program. They work so hard year round and to see them rewarded at the highest level is so satisfying," said Todd Sharp, Spirit Group Coordinator/Ladybird Coach. "I realize Cardinal Nation is used to hearing about our success and has come to expect that we will bring home national titles in cheerleading and dance team. But I hope everyone understands how difficult the competition is and how amazing all of the competitors are. We take nothing for granted as a coaching staff and each year it is truly a battle for each title."
The Cardinals will compete in five divisions: Large co-ed, small co-ed, All Girl, and the Ladybird dance team which will compete in both hip-hop and team competitions. Uof L sent a total of 150 student athletes marking the largest Collegiate Spirit contingent in the country, with 50 National Championships in the last 20 years of competition led by coaches Todd Sharp, James Speed, Misty Hodges and Sheryl Knight.
