Head coach Jeff Walz spoke about the past season and Cardinals playing at the next level.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville women's basketball head coach Jeff Walz spoke with the media on Thursday afternoon, reviewing the Cardinals' 2015-16 campaign and also commenting on players competing professionally and internationally.
Walz guided Louisville to a 26-8 record, the program's sixth-consecutive season with at least 20 victories, and directed the team to the NCAA Tournament second round. The Cardinals, impressively, compiled a 15-1 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference to finish second in the regular-season standings and secure the second-most league victories in school history.
The 2015-16 campaign started off slow, Walz noted, but the team capped the year winning 25 of its final 29 contests.
Sophomore Myisha Hines-Allen transformed into one of the most dominant players in the country, earning ACC Player of the Year and WBCA and Associated Press All-America honorable mention. She averaged 17.6 points on 54.7 percent shooting and 8.4 rebounds. Mariya Moore (all-ACC first team) and Asia Durr (all-ACC freshman team; ACC all-tournament team) collected accolades during the year as well.
Heading into his 10th season, boasting a 234-85 record, Walz also discussed the highly talented incoming class – consisting of Bionca Dunham, Ciera Johnson, Jazmine Jones, Kyle Shook, Sydney Zambrotta – that is expected to arrive on campus during the summer.
Walz then highlighted Angel McCoughtry making her second U.S. Olympic basketball team, Monique Reid on the verge of helping her Bulgarian team win its league title, Shawnta' Dyer being named to the 2016 All-Star Game in Romania, and four former Cardinals earning WNBA camp invitations (Angel McCoughtry and Shoni Schimmel, Atlanta Dream; Asia Taylor, Indiana Fever; and, Jude Schimmel, Dallas Wings).
