Six student-athletes were recognized as the ACC Top 6 for Service Award
On Tuesday, April 19, six University of Louisville student-athletes were recognized at the Louisville Student Awards as the ACC Top 6 for Service Award which is given at each ACC institution annually to those who are dedicated to serving others and have shown a passion for enriching the lives of others. Recipients from Louisville included Olivia Boesing, Tim Kubel, Taylor Bradley, Caitlin Gilmore, Isabella Habuda and Jerry Ramirez who have demonstrated outstanding service and community relations by the number of hours they have volunteered with various charities and service organizations throughout the past year.
Boesing, junior on the women's tennis team, spent a great portion of her summer working an elementary school camp for South East Christian Church where she led third through fifth grade-aged students through interactive group activities. She also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board as the Community Outreach Representative. In this role, she coordinated student-athlete led stations during the American Heart Association's Healthy Family Training Camp. The event looks to promote a heathy lifestyle in people of all ages.
Kubel, a sophomore on the men's soccer team, participated in the Coach for College overseas service-learning program. During Coach for College he traveled to rural Vietnam, teaching life skills, sports, and tutoring middle school children for three weeks. He also volunteered with the Louisville Metro Adapted Sports Program participating in adapted sports activities to support those with special needs.
Bradley, a women's track & field junior, also participated in the Coach for College service-learning program. As a Louisvillian herself, she focused a lot of her service to giving back to the local youth. She has participated in events with local elementary schools and organizations like the Boys & Girls Club and Maryhurst.
This past summer, through Seed Ministry, Habuda, a sophomore on the women's soccer team, went on a mission trip to Ghana. She spent a week assisting with a faith-based service project. She also volunteered at the Kentucky Derby Mini/Full Marathon as well as with Girls on the Run and volunteered at the Semi-Annual Race, promoting fitness and health in young girls.
Gilmore, a track & field senior, participated in two long term service projects. She was an avid volunteer for Louisville Metro Animal Services. She helped staff with the animals' maintenance and spent a great deal of time helping the organization by fostering and training animals. Her second major project was participating in PhUn Week with the goal was to teach elementary school students about physiology and get them acquainted with the basics.
Ramirez, senior on the men's soccer team, is an active volunteer to many local organizations. He was the leader behind the team's partnership with the Churchill School, which won the 2015 ACC Game Changers Award. He organized a program which incorporated weekly activities such as bicycling or soccer with the students from the school who have special needs. As an international student-athlete, he is the president of Louisville International Family Enrichment (LIFE). Through LIFE he coordinated volunteer work with Americana which provides a spectrum of services for the many diverse residents of Louisville Metro. These services enable people to discover and utilize resources to build strong families, create a safe, supportive community and realize their individual potential. He also is the president for the SAAC where he is constantly recruiting fellow student-athletes to attend and volunteer at many community events
