UofL student-athletes visit the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Jeffersonville, Ind. as part of UofL's Student-Athlete Career Exploration Program
On Wednesday, several University of Louisville student-athletes visited to the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Jeffersonville, Ind. for a behind-the-scenes tour and information session as part of UofL's Student-Athlete Career Exploration Program.
The purpose of the trip was to introduce student-athletes to the types of internships and careers possible with an internationally successful corporation. Student-athletes interacted with the leadership of the facility and learned about their career paths to Amazon, their educational backgrounds and what they loved about their jobs.
Â
"The student-athletes had the opportunity to see the amazing dynamics behind the logistics of Amazon," said Director of Student Athlete Leadership and Development, Alyssa Murphy. "They learned the history of how the company developed and has grown over the years. It definitely was eye-opening to see how it all works after a customer places an order and then to realize how a company like Amazon impacts the community, especially with jobs."
Â
Those who attended the tour came away impressed with the experience. "I thought it was really interesting to see how the company managed the logistics and the operations – it was really impressive, especially the technology aspect," said sophomore men's tennis player Santiago Salazar. "You don't always have opportunities to go to one of the most successful companies in the world and get to see them work behind the scenes."
Â
The visit also provided a correlation between the classroom and the actual working environment. "You learn a lot in the classroom, but I think what you learn the most is when you go outside of the classroom and see first-hand and get to experience it," said women's soccer player Inger Katrine Bjerke.
Â
"If I had the opportunity to do this again, I definitely would, and I would also highly recommend this experience for other students as well," said sophomore field hockey player Elina Pereira. "I'm a marketing major and it was interesting to see that they also have a marketing department. The whole process was really cool. I'm still thinking about all the different systems they go through. I'm learning about this in my operations classes and it was good to see it all in action."
Â
The tour was coordinated by Murphy, who works with student-athletes to help them hone and develop their leadership potential through exploring their passions and personal strengths. She helps student-athletes create and continually update their resumes, improve public speaking skills, master the art of interviewing and network with leaders of all industries while representing themselves and the University of Louisville in the best possible manner.
