Student-Athlete Advisory Committee takes part in Take Back the Night Rally
The annual Take Back the Night Rally was held Wednesday evening at the Red Barn hosted by the University of Louisville PEACC (Prevention, Education, and Advocacy on Camps and Community) Center. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took part in the event to support this work on campus and in the community.
The purpose of the annual Take Back the Night Rally is to protest interpersonal violence in relationships. The idea is to bring together a diverse group of community and campus groups to support the cause. Events at the rally included speakers, a speak out, performances, a candlelight vigil, and a march to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
Members from the SAAC Executive Board spoke at the rally about the partnership between UofL Athletics and PEACC, specifically this year's partnership around the One Love Foundation's Escalation Workshops. These discussion-based workshops promote healthy decision making and bystander invention as it relates to relationship abuse. Over 300 Cardinal student-athletes have participated in the workshops during the academic year as part of the LCare student-athlete development program. In support of PEACC, the SAAC created and sold wristbands with "Cardinals RISE UP" to support this year's Take Back the Night theme. Over $450 was raised and will be donated on behalf of the student-athletes to support PEACC's programming.
Jerry Ramirez, SAAC President and a senior on the men's soccer team, said "I thought it was quite admirable to see all the diverse groups that attended the event and took a stand for domestic violence. I am thankful with all the student-athletes who bought a wristband and supported the PEACC program financially. The crowd and Sally Evans were extremely thankful."
