Louisville Student-Athletes Promote Literacy
Last week, 65 Cardinal student-athletes went into 10 local Louisville schools and organizations to participate in Read Across America. Student-athletes read short stories, gave motivational talks and spent time engaging with young students to promote literacy.
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program created by the National Education Association. The program has been in existence since 1998. It calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of the famous children's author Dr. Seuss. Many schools turn the one-day event into a weeklong celebration, bringing in guest readers throughout the week. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers.
Morgan Elfstrom, community outreach representative for All-Girl Cheer, assisted in organizing a major appearance at Family Scholar House to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day. "It was really fun getting to read Dr. Seuss books to the children at the Family Scholar House. I thought it was great to celebrate such an influential man's birthday with the kids! Dr. Seuss books were what I grew up reading and it was refreshing to see that the kids now-a-days are growing up reading them as well. I very much enjoyed Read Across America."
The Cardinals' participation in Read Across America is part of the Athletic Department's continued efforts to have student-athletes give back to the Louisville community. Thus far for this school year, UofL student-athletes have done over 8,500 hours of community service, setting a school record for service. Community Relations Assistant, Monica Negron who oversees the CardsCARE program is excited for Louisville Athletics' commitment to the community. "It's been an amazing experience seeing how our student-athletes can bring smiles to the faces of so many. I am very proud of their constant dedication to giving back to the community and excited to see more and more student-athletes get involved."
