Cards get singles wins from seniors Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 41 Notre Dame in an ACC matchup Sunday afternoon at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Pavilion.
Â
"We defeated the Irish handily last year on our home courts and they returned the favor this year," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "Overall they were more solid and played the big points better than we did."
Â
Notre Dame (8-6, 2-0 ACC) took an early lead with doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Grayson Broadus and Nicolas Montoya defeated Louisville's senior Jeffrey Brown and freshman Christian Haushammer 6-1 to give the Irish an early edge while Eddy Covalschi and Alex Lawson clinched the first point with a 6-2 win over senior Alex Gornet and junior Sean Donohue.
Â
The Irish picked up points on courts five and one to build a 3-0 lead and Hagar secured the match at the three-spot where he defeated Louisville freshman George Hedley 7-6, 6-2 to make the score 4-0. Notre Dame added a final singles win on court six where Kenneth Sabacinski edged Haushammer 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Â
Louisville got singles victories from both of its seniors with Gornet registering a 6-7, 6-1, 10-6 decision over Lawson at the No. 2 spot and Brown prevailing over Grayson Broadus 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 on court four.
