Cards take the doubles point, freshman George Hedley wins in singles
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 42 Georgia Tech in an ACC matchup on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cardinals clinched the doubles point but the Yellow Jackets won five of the six singles matches to move to 9-4 (2-1 ACC) on the season. The Cardinals fell to 8-8 (0-3 ACC) on the season.
"Good doubles point," said head coach Rex Ecarma. "That team is very, very good at doubles and we got them. They are coming off a road win against a national tennis powerhouse, Duke. They beat Duke right before they played us. I knew it was going to be an uphill battle because this was our first outdoor match and we haven't played outdoors since November."
To start the match, Georgia Tech's Christopher Eubanks and Carlos Benito defeated Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown 6-3 at No. 1. The duo of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley took down No. 65 ranked Casey Kay and Michael Kay 7-5 to even the doubles point before the tandem of Sean Donohue and Courtney Lock clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-4 victory over Nathan Rakitt and Andrew Li.
The Yellow Jackets won the first three singles matches to jump out to a 3-1 lead. Daniel Yun defeated Brown 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 while Rakitt defeated Christian Haushammer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 and Cole Fiegel registered a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Brandon Lancaster.
Louisville cut the deficit to 3-2 when Hedley won at No. 3 singles with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory. On court two, Kougoucheff split sets with Benito, dropping the first set 6-2 but rebounding for a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second set. Benito clinched the match for the Yellow Jackets with a 6-3 win in the third set. The match ended on court one where Gornet dropped the first set 7-6 (7-5) but recovered to win the second set 6-3. The two battled to a 4-4 tie before Eubanks won the final two sets for a 6-4 victory.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday as they host a doubleheader at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. They will host Clemson for a conference matchup at 1 p.m. before facing Northern Kentucky at 6 p.m.
