Myisha Hines-Allen is one of two finalists from the ACC.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville's Myisha Hines-Allen is one of 15 finalists for the prestigious Wade Trophy, presented annually to the nation's most outstanding NCAA Division I women's basketball player, the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association announced Thursday.
Hines-Allen is one of four sophomores on the list – the other 11 are juniors or seniors – and she is one of two finalists from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members consisting of leading basketball coaches, journalists and administrators. The committee will select the winner of The Wade Trophy from among these 15 finalists who also are named to the 10-member WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Team when it is chosen in April. The WBCA will officially announce The Wade Trophy winner during the WBCA Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women's Final Four® in Indianapolis.
"The WBCA applauds these outstanding student-athletes for being named finalists for women's basketball's highest honor, the Wade Trophy," WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew said. "These finalists have demonstrated excellence on the basketball court, in addition to a commitment to academics, sportsmanship, and ethical conduct. They captivated national audiences with their talent throughout the season and have left their mark on our game. We honor these individuals, their teams, and coaches."
The Montclair, N.J., native, Hines-Allen recently was named to the WBCA all-Region I team in addition to being named the ACC Player of the Year by the league's Blue Ribbon Panel. She also earned first team all-league honors – both from the league's media and the coaches – and was voted to the ACC All-Tournament first team.
A three-time ACC Player of the Week, she is third in the league in scoring (17.6), rebounding (8.4), and field goal percentage (54.7), seventh in free throw percentage (80.0), second in defensive rebounds (5.4), and tied for seventh in offensive rebounds (3.0).
The Montclair, N.J., native has pushed her way into the school's record books this year. Her 581 points are the ninth most in a season in program history and her 246 field goals are fifth most in a single season. Her 277 rebounds are ninth most in a season, while her average is the best since Monique Reid averaged 9.2 from 2009-10.
The Wade Trophy, now in its 39th year, is named after the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State coach Lily Margaret Wade. This most esteemed award, regarded as 'The Heisman of Women's Basketball,' debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball.
