Student-Athletes Participate in Personal Development
On Tuesday, March 22, as part of the student-athlete development program, LCARE; a combination of 130 Cardinal student-athletes, UofL Athletics Staff and UofL campus personnel participated in a personal development seminar. Mark Matteson, motivational speaker and international best-selling author, helped motivate the audience to cultivate the skills needed to set and achieve their goals.
For over 20 years, Matteson's positive humor and peak-performance tools have impacted organizations around the globe kindling personal and professional success for tens of thousands of people. Matteson offers tools of empowerment and lessons to better inspire his audience to be the best they can be.
Matteson's enthusiasm and crowd interaction kept the audience entertained as he incorporated life lessons with each story. Men's soccer head coach, Ken Lolla started the evening off with the introduction. Having used Matteson for his own team, Coach Lolla told the audience how much of a difference Matteson's teachings have made in his own life and how they can affect your ability to excel. He had the audience write down five of their personal goals. The messaging behind it was simple, "this little card can change your life". Matteson focused on setting goals that are "positive, powerful, personal and present tense" also knowns as the four Ps of goal-setting.
Matteson used interactive techniques to display the four P's and how they are essential for goal setting. He got the audience up and moving with a fun dance competition. At the end of the evening, Bre'Yana Wash (women's track & field) - who was also winner of the dance competition - said her biggest take-away on the evening was "the importance of repetition. Repetitious positive self-talk and visualizing goals make reaching them that much easier."
Many student-athletes spoke out on this key concept of active goal setting and are eager to start planning. Freshman women's soccer student-athlete, Gabi Vincent, said the best piece of advice was "making your goals present." Senior Alex Gornet from men's tennis, said he will now start "writing his goals everyday".
Matteson challenged the audience to breed a positive culture each and every day. Each participant left with his book Freedom from Fear, Matteson's international bestseller. It is a `how to' on improving your attitude and mindset towards life. He gave the crowd a test to pick their teammates up and give them more compliments. In doing so, they will foster a positive culture and atmosphere as they look forward to their future endeavors.
