Sophomore Sidney Melton and freshman Michala Riggle named 2015-16 Softball Iron Cardinals
The 2015-16 Iron Cardinal Award for softball was presented to sophomore Sidney Melton and freshman Michala Riggle on Wednesday morning at the University of Louisville's Marshall Center.
The award is earned by the top performers on each team during preseason performance testing which includes vertical jump, squat and 20-yard sprints as well as selected other events. The winner is determined after the results are scored and totaled using the Louisville Sports Performance Index. 'Iron Cardinals' have their names placed on the recognition board on the Wall of Honor in the Marshall Center for one year. In addition, a group picture of each year's 'Iron Cardinals' is displayed permanently in the Marshall Center.
"Sidney and Michala are both very deserving of the Iron Cardinal award," said Molly Binetti, Louisville Sports Performance Coach for the softball team. "Sidney is a natural athlete who made tremendous strides in her strength, power, and speed from freshman to sophomore year and she had achance to showcase that over the past week. At the beginning of this year she made it clear she wanted to be an Iron Cardinal, and she worked hard to make it happen.Michala is a freshman who came in under the radar and has had an unbelievable work ethic and mentality all year. She has completely transformed her body over the past six months and it is really exciting to see the results. The best is yet to come for both Sidney and Michala - both in the weight room and on the field."
Louisville will open the 2016 season this weekend at the Islanders Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Cards will face Sam Houston State, Iowa and Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the tournament which will take place Feb. 12-14.
