Women’s Basketball Gives Back During Holiday Time

The Cardinals volunteered for three hours at the Dare to Care Senior Outreach Warehouse.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There is little doubt that Louisville women's basketball has been one of the best programs in the country in giving the assist.
The Cardinals, who have 124 through six games, added a more significant one on Wednesday.
For more than three hours on the day before Thanksgiving, members of the Louisville program assisted the Dare to Care Senior Outreach Warehouse. The Cardinals, using palettes of food provided by the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, prepared boxes of meals to be delivered to senior citizens throughout the community.
Before returning to campus, Louisville completed 20 skids – equivalent to a thousand boxes of food – that will serve seniors in 13 counties in the Kentuckiana area. The rate and volume was similar to that of the National Guard and UPS.
“Dare to Care only accomplishes its mission with community support,” Dare to Care executive director Brian Riendeau said. “The UofL women's basketball team gave us an afternoon of their valuable time to ensure we can provide critically needed nutrition to struggling senior citizens. Their energy and compassion made a difference in these seniors' lives and are a perfect example of what makes Louisville a great place.”
The location in which the Cardinals volunteered specifically caters to the senior citizens. According to Dare to Care, one in eight seniors in Kentuckiana is at risk of hunger due to limited budgets, declining mobility, or medical issues. Once the food is delivered from CSFP, volunteers are needed to help take the palettes of food and organize boxes of meals.
Dare to Care partners with over 300 local social service agencies, such as food pantries, shelters, and emergency kitchens to distribute food to the community. In the past year, Dare to Care and its partners provided over 16 million meals to our community.
