Women's Tennis Inks Smith
November 16, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Smith is a five-star recruit from Houston.
The University of Louisville women's tennis team signed Maya Smith of Houston, Texas to an National Letter-of-Intent.
Â
" I am excited to announce the signing of Maya Smith to University of Louisville tennis family. Maya is a really good fit for our program, she is a very aggressive player that likes to dictate what happens in her matches," said UofL coach Mark Beckham.  "She doesn't like reacting to her opponent but wants to control play and she has the skill and athleticism to do it consistently. She will have to get used  to playing at the level we play but her potential is unlimited. She has weapons that will translate well, a very big serve and an elite level backhand. The thing I like the most about Maya is that she isn't scared of anyone.
Â
Â
Smith is a five-star recruit who is currently ranked No. 55 in the national tennis recruiting standings. She began the 2016 season winning five consecutive tournaments. The quarterfinalist of the USA Open Regional Playoffs, she was also a quarterfinalist in the USTA Adult HardCourt Championship. She made the round of 16 at the Texas GrandSlam and the quarterfinals of the National Level 2. She went 11-1 in Junior BNP Paribas Open in Paris, France.
Â
Â
She wants to play the best players in college tennis and not only play them but beat them and she is willing to put in the work to do it, " said Beckham. "Being a 5-star rated player, she is already very accomplished and very good but she understands that she still has a lot of growth left and really wants to see how far she can go with her tennis. Maya also comes from a great family, her mother and father were with her through the whole recruiting process and they were not going to just let her go anywhere. They are both former college athletes, so they know a little more than the average parent and they are a great influence on how Maya handles herself on and off the tennis court, she is more mature than your typical high school senior. Â Players like Maya are hard to find and she is going to have a major impact on our program, so I couldn't be more thrilled that she chose us."
