CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Louisville athletics department is ranked No. 23 in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Division I final fall standings, it was announced on Thursday.
Louisville is one of eight Atlantic Coast Conference schools in the top 25, the most of any conference in the country.
The Cardinals' men's cross country team accumulated 72 points, the highest total from any of the fall sports, following its seventh-place performance at the NCAA Championships that were held in Louisville. Senior Ernest Kibet paced the team with an 18th-place finish to earn All-America honors. The group earned an automatic bid to the national stage after winning the NCAA Southeast Regional for the first time in school history.
Louisville's football team beat Texas A&M in the Music City Bowl, recording their third postseason win in four trips. Freshman Lamar Jackson ran for a career-high and Music City Bowl-record 226 yards and two touchdowns and threw for two more scores to cap the 8-5 season and deliver Louisville 45 points.
The volleyball and field hockey teams also reached postseason play during the 2015 fall campaign.
Under head coach Anne Kordes, the volleyball program produced a 25-7 record, going 18-2 in league play for a share of the ACC regular-season title. The Cardinals advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The first Division I winter standings will be released on March 24.
The Learfield standings rank institutions maintaining a broad-based program, which achieve success in men's and women's sports.
