UofL student-athletes partner with One Love Foundation
The University of Louisville Athletic Department recently partnered with the One Love Foundation to host a workshop for 120 sophomore student-athletes to raise awareness and educate students about the warning signs of relationship abuse.
The One Love Foundation was created in 2010 after the death of University of Virginia Lacrosse student-athlete, Yeardley Love. She was a victim of relationship violence and was killed by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before her college graduation.
One Love works with young people across the country to raise awareness about the warning signs of abuse and activate communities. violence.
The Escalation Workshop educated student-athletes on the dangers of relationship abuse and discussed both healthy and unhealthy relationships. Created by the One Love Foundation, the workshop taught UofL student-athletes to recognize warning signs and be aware of the signs of abuse. Additionally, it gave students tools to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation in a relationship.
The workshop began with a brief introduction of what the One Love Foundation is and the goal of the Escalation Workshop. Shortly after, student-athletes viewed a 40 minute video depicting a relationship between a college-aged couple that had clear signs of verbal, emotional and physical abuse. After the video, the large class of sophomore student-athletes split into groups to participate in facilitated small-group discussions. Louisville student-athletes, athletic administrators, coaches, and university personnel served as facilitators.
"We participated in the Escalation Workshop because it not only raises awareness around the issue of relationship abuse, but more importantly it teaches our student-athletes how to identify unsafe situations and realistic action steps," commented Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, Amy Calabrese. "Part of being a Cardinal is looking out for your teammates on and off the field. Tonight we were able to teach our second year student-athletes how to do just that through candid and authentic conversations and teaching,"
In addition to the workshop, UofL athletic teams are also raising awareness with a few projects around campus. For example, the Lacrosse team will be hosting a bake sale with all proceeds going towards the One Love Foundation from Tuesday, January 12th to Thursday, January 14th in the Student Activities Center.
"All of the proceeds we make during the bake sale go towards helping the foundation," said Courtney Boyd, senior Lacrosse player. "It is a way for our team to spread awareness around campus about the dangers of domestic violence and the signs to be aware of."
