UofL Athletics Welcomes and Educates New Cardinals
In late August, 200 new Cardinals from around the nation arrived on campus last week and made their debut at the Freshman Student Athlete Orientation. The orientation is hosted annually to introduce newcomers to campus culture and to educate the student-athletes about the University of Louisville.
Â
Every year at New-Student-Athlete Orientation, freshmen and transfers are introduced to valuable athletic department and campus resources, and also meet student-athletes from other teams. The Student-Athlete Development team puts together a collaboration of organizations around campus that will guide and ease students through the collegiate lifestyle.
Â
The participants were split up into six groups, with two to three Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members as group leaders. There were six stations providing different information to the student-athletes. The athletic department educated the athletes on a few of their services: Counseling, Performance Nutrition, Academics, and Student-Athlete organizations. As student-athletes at UofL, they will have opportunities to get involved with various programs like Student-Athletes Taking Action (SATA), Louisville International Family Education (LIFE), Student-Athletes of Color Combining Opportunities and Responsibility for Excellence (SCORE), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and SAAC. Separate from athletics, campus organizations such as PEACC (Prevention, Education, Advocacy on Campus and Community) & Campus Safety, and BRICC (Building Resiliency In Campus Coalition) helped welcome and educate the incoming freshmen.
Â
SAAC representative and orientation group leader Nolan Smith (men's swimming) said, "It was perfect because it equipped freshman with the tools they need to succeed."
With the first week of school under their belts, the new Cardinal student-athletes had a smooth transition into the life of a collegiate athlete.
