Women's Soccer Defeats UAB 1-0 on the Road
September 11, 2015 | Women's Soccer
Cardinals shutout second straight opponent
LOUISVILLE, KY. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated UAB 1-0 on Friday night at West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala. The win was the second straight shutout for the Cardinals, improving to 3-2-1 on the season.
"I thought we played very well or 65 minutes, prior to the rain and lightning delay," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We moved the ball very well and created some great chances. After the delay UAB came out very strong and put us under a lot of pressure. We still created chances but couldn't find the second goal. We were able to manage the lead and learned some valuable lessons that will help us moving forward. We are now focused on our next match at Ole Miss, who will be a very tough opponent on the road."
The Cardinals dominated play in the first half, keeping possession for the majority of the half. The Cardinals had six shots on goal, hitting the crossbar twice but could not capitalize. The Cardinal defense held the Blazers without a shot in the first half.
Louisville finished the first half with a 12-0 shot advantage and a 5-0 corner kick advantage. UAB keeper Kelsey Daughtery finished with six saves in the first half.
Much like the first half, Louisville dominated possession in the second half as well. The Cardinals hit the cross bar two more times before finally finding the back of the net.
Aubrey Baker scored in the 62nd minute off a cross from Hannah Konermann. Baker launched it from the top of the box into the goal for a 1-0 Louisville lead. Shortly after scoring the game was halted due to lightning in the area. The match resumed after more than an hour delay.
After delay the Cardinals continue to create opportunities. UAB had a shot in the 71st minute but Louisville keeper made the save to keep the clean sheet. The Blazers had another shot that went wide in the 80th minute but the Cardinal defense held tough the final minutes to secure the shutout.
Louisville finished the match with an 18-2 shot advantage and an 8-2 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with one save and her second shutout of the season. UAB's keeper finished with 10 saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13 as they travel to Ole Miss for a 1:00 p.m. match.
