SATA Raises Awareness and Funds for Pencils of Promise
May 08, 2015 | General
The University of Louisville's Student-Athletes Taking Action organization (SATA) conducted a fundraiser at the end of the 2015 school year to raise money for Pencils of Promise - a for-purpose organization that builds schools with long-term sustainable impact in developing countries. A student-led initiative on Louisville's campus looks to raise $25,000 to build a Pencils of Promise school in the name of the University of Louisville.
Members of SATA organized and coordinated the field day event for student-athletes of all sports to compete with and against each other, while at the same time spreading awareness about the Pencils of Promise mission.
Senior women's soccer captain and SATA President, Erin Yenney, is very passionate about the partnership. "As Louisville student-athletes we can rally around this idea. We are given so much here, but we understand we are the lucky ones. We have the influence to really make a difference in these communities, by joining in this mission - raising money and spreading awareness. We will all leave a mark on our respective sport programs, but this mission will leave an impact even beyond that of our sports!"
The Student-Athlete Field Day consisted of a relay race with six sports stations, and a Gatorade protein shake chug at the finish line. A `Pie Your Friend in the Face' station was also present. During the event there was a bake sale as another way to raise funds for the organization.
Teams had 6-8 student athletes, and the four teams with the best times moved on to the Final Four - a team peanut butter sandwich eating contest. The first two teams to eat all the sandwiches - men's swimming & diving and track & field - moved on to the championship round which consisted of a basketball layup race. Track and field took home the title of the first ever Student Athlete Field Day.
SATA hopes to plan more competitive tournament style events for athletes to compete in together, as well as making the Student Athlete Field Day bigger and better next year!
