Six University of Louisville student-athletes were recently honored with the ACC Top Six for Service Award. Chelsea Bingham, Abigail Chin, Becca Maddock, Emily Stalmack, Andrew Stewart and Erin Yenney received the honor which is awarded annually at each ACC institution to student-athletes who are dedicated to serving others and have shown a passion for enriching the lives of others.
The award recognizes six student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding service and community relations by the number of hours they have volunteered with various charities and service organizations throughout the past year.
Chelsea Bingham (Women's Track & Field)
Bingham volunteered with the University of Louisville English as a Second Language (ESL) Newcomer Academy. She also volunteered with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as a camp leader and volunteer. In addition to her ESL and FCA service, Bingham serves as the community outreach representative for Women's Track and Field and coordinates the team's involvement in various service activities throughout the year.
Abigail Chin (Women's Swimming & Diving)
Chin participated in the Coach for College oversees service-learning program. During Coach for College she traveled to rural Vietnam, teaching life skills, sports, and tutoring middle school children for three weeks. In the Louisville community she volunteered with the local Ironman competition as well as the annual Special Olympics swim meet and IMX swim meet.
Becca Maddock (Field Hockey)
Maddock's service includes activities on campus as well as in the Louisville and global community. Globally, she participated in a medical mission trip to Tanzania. On campus, she led the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Athletics' efforts in an on-campus initiative, Raise Red. Raise Red hosts an annual dance marathon donating funds to the Pediatric and Oncology sectors for University of Louisville Medical Hospital. Maddock also works diligently to get her team involved in service as she organized the partnership between Louisville Field Hockey and the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The team adopted Anthony, a young child diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor. To raise funds for their honorary team member, she organized a bake sale as well as coordinated team visits and activities with Anthony and his family. Other involvement includes reading to elementary youth during Read Across America Week, volunteering at the department's annual Healthy Family Training Camp, and speaking to elementary and middle school students.
Emily Stalmack (Women's Swimming & Diving)
Stalmack, participated in the Coach for College oversees service-learning program. In the Louisville community she volunteered with the local Ironman competition as well as the annual Special Olympics swim meet and IMX swim meet.
Andrew Stewart (Men's Track & Field)
Stewart participated in a mission trip to Belize in conjunction with his church. He also worked closely with the Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation Adapted Leisure Activities program. This program provides activities to individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. He is a regular volunteer for this organization and led athletics' involvement in various events such as the Fall Halloween Dance and Spring Fun Festival. Stewart has dedicated numerous hours as a tutor with The Cabbage Patch Settlement House, an organization to help at-risk youth in Louisville. He also serves on the SAAC Executive Board as the Community Outreach Representative.
Erin Yenney (Women's Soccer)
Yenney founded a new student-athlete group on campus, Student-Athletes Taking Action (SATA). SATA's mission is to bring together compelled athletes and people to make a difference in the Louisville and global communities. The group led Athletics' efforts in the University's Sustainability Week, raising awareness at athletic events and among the student-athlete population. She organized SATA's involvement with WaterStep, creating shoe collection points in all our athletic facilities to help fund clean water initiatives by the non-profit organization. Yenney also participated in a mission to Tanzania and service trip to Baltimore and Philadelphia through her church. Additionally, she volunteered with the Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies at the annual Easter Egg Hunt as well as participated in the University of Louisville Best Buddies Chapter, Friendship Walk and coordinated Women's Soccer efforts to partner with the Friends of Jaclyn program and adopt Gloria, a child diagnosed with a pediatric brain tumor.
