Student-Athletes Provide Awareness to Pediatric Cancer
March 02, 2015 | General
On Saturday, Feb. 28, the University of Louisville men's tennis team not only extended its streak of wins to 10, but the Cardinals also highlighted their dedication to support awareness for pediatric cancer. The student-athletes wore yellow shoelaces to dedicate the day's matches to the Go4theGoal foundation.
Go4theGoal Foundation was founded in 2006 by Dr. Richard and Beth Stefanacci after their oldest son, Richard, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. In 2011 Go4theGoal launched two national campaigns, National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day and Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer. These campaigns give schools, businesses, and sports teams an opportunity to raise awareness and much needed support for kids battling cancer.
Go4theGoal provides children undergoing cancer treatment and their families with financial assistance, runs fun hospital-based programs, grants special wishes, and supplies state of the art electronic products to children and pediatric oncology units across the country. Go4theGoal strives to assist local families by providing 100% of the proceeds to the local community of the university that decide to join the cause.
Go4theGoal has partnered with many universities nationwide and is constantly looking to partner with different entities across the country to expand their reach. Since 2007, Go4theGoal has funded nearly $1,000,000.00 in research. For the past three consecutive years, Go4theGoal has earned the honor of "Top Rated Non-Profit" by Great Nonprofits.Go4theGoal.org
The cause is more personal to senior Chris Simich, whose family has been affected by cancer first hand. "Albeit a small gesture, I am grateful to have the opportunity to raise money for cancer patients. Both my grandmothers were affected by cancer and so anything our team can do to help, we will."
