Women's Tennis Match dedicated to Cancer Awareness
March 17, 2015 | General
The March 13 women's tennis match was dedicated to the Go4theGoal Foundation and the Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry
Friday's University of Louisville Women's Tennis Cancer Awareness match was dedicated to the Go4theGoal foundation as well as the Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry.
Student-athletes wore yellow shoelaces supporting the Go4theGoal foundation, which provides resources to those affected by pediatric cancer in the Louisville area. The match was also the first in a series of five Be the Match donor drive events. At Friday's event, as well as in future events, staffed tables will have information and will have swab kits available for those that decide registering is right for them. There will also be donation boxes for anyone inclined to financially help the cause.
Be the Match works in association with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Its primary goal is to identify unrelated donors for patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant but who have no family member who is a suitable tissue match. When a volunteer (between the ages of 18-44) registers as a potential donor, his/ her tissue type is listed on the donor file and is compared with the tissue type of patients in need of a transplant. If you are identified as a possible donor for a patient, additional testing would be required to determine if your tissue type matches the patient's closely enough for a transplant.
Below is a list of the upcoming staffed Be the Match donor drive events:
