Louisville Wins Four Races on Day One at Oak Ridge

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The No. 18 Louisville rowing team earned four race wins during the opening day of competition at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday at Melton Hill Lake.
"Today was exciting for our team. This is a huge event and early in the season. We are able to tick a lot of boxes early, and that helps get a lot of things out of the way," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "This is one of the first times, if not the first, that we have raced Yale and we raced well against them despite the losses."
The Cardinals rowed to victories in the varsity four, second varsity eight, second varsity four and third varsity eight/novice eight events during the afternoon session of the two-day event. Louisville's second varsity eight crew of Sophie St. Martin (coxswain), Rebecca Yaklic, Hanna Spittel, Ashleigh Hodge, Amanda Zalno, Kylen Pattermann, Marissa Thalen, Kylie Noltemeyer and Lucrezia Fossi defeated No. 12 Notre Dame by a margin of less than two seconds, while UCF and Kansas were third and fourth respectively.
In the varsity four event, the Cardinals' crew of Karina Baldwin (coxswain), Rebecca Busk, Allison Zimmermann, Madeleine Chesney and Maddy Staubitz narrowly defeated the Fighting Irish by a margin of less than 0.3 seconds with Kansas and UCF finishing the field. In the second varsity four race, Louisville's crew of Chiara Ponko (coxswain), Elise Valantine, Gabi Biedenharn, Kelsey Webb and Katie Miller finished more than three seconds ahead of second-place Notre Dame with Kansas and UCF rounding out the race. Lastly, the Cardinals earned a win in the third varsity eight/novice eight event.
"In the afternoon races, we were able to race all the way down the course with a couple of teams fighting for the lead the entire time. What a great way to start the season," explained Copeland. "We were also able to finally see the novice team show their stuff. They did a great job and kept their composure. It was a very impressive start, especially without having any practices on the water yet this semester. I am very proud of our ladies."
Louisville will close the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Sunday morning at Melton Hill Lake.
