Team One Partners with Kosair Children's Hospital
February 13, 2015 | General
Members of the University of Louisville's Team One Women's Leadership Academy partnered with Kosair Children's Hospital by hosting a Valentine's Day party for the patients and their families.
The student-athletes made Valentine's Day crafts with the kids, played games and decorated cookies. Valentine's parties were held for all the patients, their siblings, as well as a special party in the oncology unit.
Team One member and freshman volleyball player Eleni Georgiafandis is very passionate about the role student-athletes play in the community. "I think the most important part of being a student athlete is reaching out to the community. We are so blessed to be in a position where we can reach out to kids like the patients at Kosair and make a difference in their lives. If we can touch just one life or make one kid's day brighter, then we've done our job."
Team One started two years ago as a way to effectively educate and empower Louisville's elite female tier of student-athlete leaders. The goal of Team One is to prepare the student-athletes to be leaders and captains of championship teams as well as for careers once their playing days end. Team One allows individuals from different female teams to learn from their peers. As team leaders they come together to share ideas, struggles and spend time impacting the community. Once a month, this group meets to grow their leadership knowledge and find ways to better themselves and their teams. This month's community service focused on Kosair Children's Hospital.
For more than a century, Kosair Children's Hospital and its predecessor hospitals have cared for the children of Kentucky and Southern Indiana without regard to their families' ability to pay. Kosair Children's Hospital is Kentucky's only full-service, free-standing pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children and is an advocate for the health and well-being of all children. U of L Athletics has built a great relationship with the hospital and is always looking at ways to get involved in the community.
