LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Head coach Jeff Walz has been preaching defense to his team all season long.
Sunday's message was received clearly at halftime.
The Cardinals (4-5) swarmed IUPUI in the second half, limiting the Jaguars to just 8-of-21 from the floor, and overcame a double-digit halftime deficit for a 70-61 victory at the KFC Yum! Center.
Briahanna Jackson scored 21 of her game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds and two steals. The redshirt junior, who has produced three games with at least 20 points this year, was clutch down the stretch, scoring eight of the Cardinals' 10 points over the final two minutes of regulation.
Myisha Hines-Allen also had a major hand in Louisville's second-half success on offense, producing 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds. The sophomore finished with her second career double-double, totaling 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The two were just as pivotal on defense.
Jackson collected two of five second-half steals for the Cardinals, who forced IUPUI (7-3) into 12 turnovers over the final 20 minutes of play. The Jaguars connected on just 8-of-21 attempts from the floor in the second half after making better than 54 percent of their shots in the first half.
IUPUI noticeably struggled in the second half adjusting to Louisville's pesky defense, turning the ball over 12 times and scoring just five points over the final 4:30.
Louisville kept chipping at the 14-point halftime deficit, eventually cutting it to one on a jumper by Cortnee Walton. Mariya Moore then hit a 3-pointer on the wing with 6:32 remaining in the contest, giving the Cardinals their first lead since 3:02 in the opening period.
The Cardinals pushed their lead to double digits, ultimately sealing the win, on the second of two made free throws by Jackson with 49 seconds left in the contest.
Walton finished just three points shy of a double-double, totaling seven points and 10 rebounds.
IUPUI, though, was in command for much of the contest, leading for 25:57.
After falling behind 9-3 in the opening minutes, the Jaguars connected on five-consecutive shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and hit both of their free throw attempts to grab a 17-13 lead. IUPUI finished with a 20-13 advantage on 66.7 percent shooting in the first period and extended its lead to 36-22 by halftime.
Akilah Sims had 15 points to pace the Jaguars, who received points from nine of their 10 players in the game.
Louisville returns to action on Tuesday against Dartmouth, playing its second of four games over an eight-day stretch. Tip at the KFC Yum! Center is set for 7 p.m.
