Freshman Ayeisha McFerran will represent Ireland in a five-match series against Spain
University of Louisville field hockey goalkeeper Ayeisha McFerran, has been selected to represent Ireland in a five-match series against Spain January 15-19, 2016.
Â
"We are very excited and proud that Ayeisha has an opportunity to excel in an international competition," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Representing your country is an incredible honor and she should have confidence with the preparation that she had competing in the ACC, the best conference in the country . Ayeisha has committed herself in the classroom and hockey pitch in her short time at Louisville and we are in full support of her Olympic and international aspirations while pursuing her degree."
McFerran, who hails from Larne, Northern Ireland, has been a member of the Irish National Team since 2014 and has earned 32 senior caps thus far. She competed in the 2015 World League Round 3 Games in Valencia where the Irish posted an eighth place finish. While playing in the World League 2 tournament, the goalkeeper came off the bench to help the Irish beat Canada in an overtime shootout and win the championship.
Â
McFerran is coming off of an impressive rookie season in which she became the first freshman in program history to earn All-America honors. The 2015 NFHCA All-West Region first team selection led the ACC – and tied the school season record - with nine shutouts. She posted a 1.24 goals-against average on the season, and earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 3.
