Colin Lyman (baseball) and Laura Restrepo (women's golf) represented Louisville on November 12 and 13 at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee fall meeting in Greensboro, N.C.
Shamaree Brown, ACC Director of Student-Athlete Programs and Compliance, led the meeting over the course of two days. This meeting brings together SAAC representatives from each ACC institution and is held four times per year, twice by teleconference and twice in-person. The group shared best practices and discussed topics such as the overall student-athlete experience, promoting SAAC awareness, student-athlete mental health and the NCAA governance changes. Student-athletes also had the opportunity to give back to the community by visiting a local elementary school in Greensboro, N.C.
The primary purpose of the in-person meetings is to allow representatives to come together as a group to set goals and discuss priorities for the ACC SAAC. However, as the conference prepares for the changing NCAA governance structure, the meeting also serves as an opportunity for student-athletes to engage in dialog about legislative and governance issues with ACC administration. Additionally, the group heard from guest speaker, Dr. David S. Lindsay, Executive Director of the Project Life Movement, about creating a partnership between the ACC and this organization to encourage college students to join the national bone marrow donor registry.
"This was a great experience that allowed me to learn a lot about other schools and what they are doing in their community," said Lyman. "It really allowed me to become more informed about NCAA legislation and gave me a lot of valuable information to bring back to UofL."
"Participating in this meeting was a great opportunity for me," said Restrepo. "I was able to engage with other student-athletes in our conference and discuss topics that are very important for us. It is great to see that student-athletes are able to have a voice and share their opinions on issues that affect us all. It also gave me insight into all the hard work that happens behind the scenes to make the ACC the best conference in the country."
