Cardinals earn their best finish in school history
Louisville, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Championship held at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park on Saturday afternoon. The finish is the best in school history by the Cardinals and the second Top 10 finish at the NCAA Championships.
"We are so proud of these eight young men," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Joe has done a tremendous job of bringing them along through the championship season and today was a great capstone event."
Senior Ernest Kibet led the Cardinals today finishing 18th, for his first career Top 20 finish in the NCAA Championship. He finished with a time of 30:09.4, earning All-American honors to wrap up his cross country career at Louisville.
"I was struggling at the start of the season during our heavy runs," said Kibet. "I felt like my heart was going to pop out. But to have the best finish in our program's history makes all the hard work and effort worthwhile."
Junior Edwin Kibichiy finished 41st with a time of 30:29.8. Senior Japhet Kipkoech wrapped up a fantastic senior year with a 53rd place finish. He clocked a time of 30:34.9 in his first NCAA Championship.
Newcomer Calvin Chemoiywo finished 88th in his first NCAA Championship race. He finished with a time of 30:51.9. Newcomer George Yator was the final Louisville runner to score. Yator finished 211th with a time of 32:15.0.
Freshman Daniel Fleace finished at 241st with a time of 33:07.2 while Matt Stephenson finished 247th with a time of 33:31.0.
"It meant a lot to be at home today for the NCAA Championships," said Cowper. "A special thanks to Josh Heird, David Lawhorn and the countless volunteers for doing an amazing job of managing the championship experience throughout the week."
