Student-Athletes host a Presidential Fitness Challenge
On Tuesday, November 10, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) partnered with the Family Scholar House to host a Presidential Fitness Challenge. Student-athletes from women's golf, men's tennis, women's soccer, men's tennis, and women's track & field all participated to make it a great evening for a group of 30 kids. The purpose of the day was to promote a healthy life while also educating the kids on ways to exercise and stay active.
Student-athletes were split up into three groups, where each group led a specific fitness station. In the first station, student-athletes led participants through an obstacle course. They timed the kids and also added in dynamic warm-ups to teach them ways student-athlete exercise. At the final station student-athletes got the kids moving doing small sided games like duck, duck, goose and team relays. Once the night was complete, each participant received a certificate for completion and a special prize from the student-athletes.
Each year SAAC representatives select a 'Charity of Choice.' This year, they chose the family Scholar House. Family Scholar House's mission is to end the cycle of poverty and transform the community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve life-long self-sufficiency. Family Scholar House is an organization that gives single parents the tools to succeed and assist them to get a college education. It also encourages the participants and their children to become a community for each other as they focus on common education goals and develop new skills together.
For the fall semester, they wanted to help the kids get active. Next semester, the funds raised at the annual Student-Athlete Talent Show will be donated to organization. SAAC President Jerry Ramirez from men's soccer was one of the student-athletes who volunteered at the event. On behalf of the student-athletes who volunteered, Jerry said "It was a great experience to be able to give some energy to the kids and also be energized by their attitude and enthusiasm."
