Former Louisville standout Alicja Wolny joins softball staff as volunteer coach
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville head softball coach Sandy Pearsall has announced that former Cardinal standout Alicja Wolny will join her staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Her duties will include assisting with practice preparation and assisting with both offense and defense.
"It's great to have Alicja working with our program," said Pearsall. "She was a tremendous player, an All-American and a true competitor. She loves the University of Louisville and she loves the game and I know she will help us immensely this season as we enter our second year in the ACC."
Wolny, who played for the Louisville from 2010-2013, earned 2013 NFCA second team all-America honors after leading the Cardinals with a .423 batting average. The first baseman belted out 11 home runs, scored 42 runs and set a new school record with 55 RBIs during her senior season. The four-year starter was a two-time All-Great Lakes Region first team and four-time All-BIG EAST Conference selection. She finished her career ranked in the top five in all-time hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and walks, games played and started.
During Wolny's playing career, the Cardinals made four NCAA appearances – while earning a national seed twice – and won the 2012 BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles. Throughout her time here, Louisville was a fixture in the national rankings reaching as high as No. 7 and spending several weeks in the top 10 in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. As a freshman, her team set a school record with 48 wins, as a junior, the Cards shattered that record with 55 wins.
Upon graduation from Louisville in 2013, Wolny, whose mother is a native of England, was selected to the Great Britain National Team. She has competed in the 2013 and 2015 European National Championships as well as the 2014 World Championship.
"I'm really excited to be back working with the team," said Wolny. "It's going to be interesting being on the coaching side rather than on the field, but I am looking forward to it. Of course, it's great to be working with Coach Pearsall and Jay (Miller) and Stacy (May-Johnson) and the entire staff. I'm excited to learn and help however I can."
The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native earned her Bachelor of Science in exercise science/sports medicine in 2013.
