Cross Country Competes in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday

LOUISVILLE, KY. -- After an impressive showing at the Commodore Classic two weeks ago, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams will compete in familiar this weekend at the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. The men's 8K gold race begins at 9:30 while the women's 5K gold race begins at 10:15 a.m.

The Cardinal men continued their strong start to the season when the men picked up a victory at the Commodore Classic. Senior Japhet Kipkoech led the field with a time of 24:34.6 in the 8K event to pick up his first collegiate win of his career. Kipkoech's performance earned him ACC Co-Performer of the Week honors. Junior Edwin Kibichiy finished second with a time of 24:35.7 while newcomer Calvin Chemoiywo finished fifth with a season best time of 24:50.5.

The women picked up their second straight top-10 finish at the Commodore Classic when they finished ninth. Freshman Aurilla Wilson led the Cardinals with a season best 5K time of 18:15.4. Two athletes registered career bests at the Commodore Classic. Senior Leah Kiyohara finished with a career best time of 18:23.1 while junior Alex Bunch finished with a time of 18:41.5. Freshman Hannah Herd posted a season-best of 18:30.0 while freshman Abigail Wright posted her season best of 18:57.0 to round out the Louisville runners.

Last year at the Greater Louisville Classic, the Cardinal men finished sixth with Ernest Kibet and Edwin Kibichiy finishing in third and fourth places, respectively. The women finished 13^th with Kelsie Schwartz leading the Cardinal runners with a time of 17:48.61.

After a week off, the Cardinals will host the Pre Nationals on Oct. 17 at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park.
