Restrepo, Women's Golf Win Season Opener at Cardinal Kickoff
September 07, 2014 | Women's Golf

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Laura Restrepo fired a 3-under-par 141 for a season-opening victory, and one of the two University of Louisville women's golf teams captured the Cardinal Kickoff team title on Sunday at Chariot Run Golf Course in Laconia, Ind.
Facing Georgia, Cincinnati, and Morehead State in the team competition, the Louisville black team combined for a 585 to finish with a 33-stroke advantage over Georgia and Louisville's red team.
It's the Cardinals' sixth team title under Trimble, who led Louisville to the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship in 2013.
"I am very happy with our performance, but I think we left a lot out there," head coach Courtney Trimble said. "I'm really pleased with what I see top to bottom and the improvements we made last year, and it's great to go out with a win."
Restrepo's individual win marked her third collegiate victory and second consecutive in a season opener. She won the IU Fall Kickoff to begin the 2013 season. Restrepo tallied a 2-under-par 72 in the first round and followed that with a 1-under in the second. For the tournament, she finished in a tie for the second-most birdies (6).
A Panama City, Panama, native, Restrepo led Louisville last season with a 73.1 stroke average and logged six top-10 finishes during the 2013-14 campaign.
"I think she plays within herself," Trimble said of Restrepo. "She has improved her short game, and that makes things easier. When you can rely on your short game, you don't have to hit the ball as well. Her short game has seen big improvements and hopefully that will pay off in the long run."
Emily Haas helped anchor the winning team with a runner-up finish. She logged a two-round score of 142 - one shot behind Restrepo - after owning a share of the lead through the first round with the junior. Katie Petrino and Katie Mitchell each recorded top-10 finishes for the Louisville black team.
The Louisville red team also boasted multiple individual solid performances, including Shannon Gramley's third-place finish. She shot a 74 in the first round and then a 75 to conclude the tournament.
Newcomer Molly Skapik finished in a tie for 25th after a solid showing through the first 18, carding a 74.
"I think they're all improving, and they're all - with the exception of Molly - are very experienced," Trimble added. "They gained some experience through last year and over the summer, and that's one thing we didn't have last year. That's a big difference maker for us, and I feel like that's going to be a big difference maker all year because of their experience."
Louisville returns to action in two weeks, vying for its third-consecutive team title at the Cardinal Cup. The two-day event at the newly renovated UofL Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky., begins on Sept. 15.
