
Softball Splits on First Day of Fall Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team opened the fall season with a 3-0 win over Bellarmine and fell 5-3 to Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville 3 - Bellarmine 0
Senior Whitney Arion went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs and freshman Nicole Pufahl was 2 for 3 with a run to back freshman Madi Norman's on hit shutout as the Cardinals defeated Bellarmine 3-0.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Pufahl singled, stole second and came around to score on Kristina Dillard's RBI hit.
Louisville added another run in the third. Arion and Brittany Duncan delivered back-to-back singles to place runners on first and second. Arion stole third and crossed the plate on Hailey Smith's sacrifice fly to bring the score to 2-0.
UofL added a final run in the fifth when Arion connected on a two-out double. After an infield hit by Norman, Arion scored on an error for the 3-0 final.
Norman struck out five and walked only one batter while holding the Knights to one hit in 7.0 innings.
Eastern Kentucky 5 - Louisville 3
In the second game of the day, Arion was 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs, in a 5-3 loss to Eastern Kentucky.
The Colonels scored two runs in the first and a run in the second to jump to a 3-0 lead.
Louisville answered Arion's two-run homer in the home half of the third to cut the lead to one run.
EKU got the run back in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-2.
Once again, the Cards pulled within a run when Sidney Melton's RBI hit brought Jordan McNary home to make the score 4-3.
The Colonels added an insurance run in the sixth for the 5-3 final.
Sophomore Maryssa Becker took the loss, giving up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and striking out three in 7.0 innings.
EKU's Hayley Flynn got the win allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out one in 3.0 innings. Krislyn Campos led the Colonels offensively, going 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Shannon McQueen was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
