On Sept. 12, UofL student-athletes had the opportunity to listen to one of the nation's most popular motivational and inspirational speakers when Dr. Kevin Elko visited the PNC Club Room at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Dr. Elko shared four key areas to focus on as they start a new year with new challenges and new aspirations.
Dr. Kevin Elko focuses on helping organizations in the areas of leadership, goal setting and various other motivational topics. Dr. Elko has worked with seven BCS National Championship Football Teams, various successful NFL teams along with many well-established Division I college athletic programs.
Dr. Elko spoke to 370 student-athletes about the ability to be coached, the mindset within practice, the attitude towards playing and the act of inspiring others. In doing, so he gave an interactive presentation giving them cues to repeat as an audience: "Separate the who from the do," to help teach student-athletes to learn to correct the behavior and recall that there is no win in comparison.
"Be where your feet are," a constant reminder that one must be in the moment in order for optimal performance.
"Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong," a mentality to breed a championship culture. Self-discipline ties in with an athlete's ability to focus,
"See a little, see a lot. See a lot, see nothing." Dr. Elko referenced a video, "Don't Eat the Marshmallows," that depicted the correlation between self-discipline and success.
Ending his speech as he had begun, Dr. Elko left the student-athletes with an optimistic cue- "My latter days will be better than my former days." The Cards are in store for great year in their inaugural campaign in the ACC having added more tools in their growing repertoire. "Winning isn't what you do, it's who you are."
