
Women's Tennis Falls to Rutgers

The No. 4 seeded University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point but could not hold off the No. 5 seed Rutgers in singles as the Cardinals fell 4-2 at the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Friday at the Andros Courts in Tampa, Florida.
UofL started out strong by taking the doubles point from Rutgers, a team it had beaten 6-1 in regular season play. Julia Fellerhoff and Elle Stokes handled Lindsay Balsamo and Mariam Zein 8-3 at No. 2. Manuela Velasquez and Rebecca Shine handled Vanessa Petrini and Lindsey Kayati 8-4 at No. 1 to clinch the point.
The singles matches proved to be a different story as the Cards were only able to score on a 6-1, 6-0 win by Rebecca Shine over Gina Li at No. 2. The clinching point for the Scarlet Knights came against Manuela Velasquez who fell 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 3.
All four quarterfinal matches are complete in the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship, with the top three seeds along with No. 5 seed Rutgers advancing to the third day of competition. In other action, top-seeded Houston and No. 3 seed USF each earned 4-0 sweeps, while No. 2 seed Memphis earned a 4-1 win over UCF.
