Louisville, Ky. - Senior guard Shoni Schimmel has been named a national semifinalist for the 2014 Women's Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Thursday. Schimmel was one of the 10 players named a semifinalist.
The American Athletic Conference leads all leagues with four representatives including UConn seniors Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley along with sophomore standout Breanna Stewart.
Schimmel was named to the preseason list after being a key player in the Cardinals' success last season. She was named the Most Outstanding Player for the Oklahoma City Regional. She also earned WBCA All-Region honors and first team All-BIG EAST honors.
This season Schimmel is leading the Cardinals in scoring with 17.4 points per game. She also leads the Cardinals in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 38.2 percent. She recently became just the second player in school history to score 2,000 career points along with former standout Angel McCoughtry. She currently ranks second on Louisville's all-time scoring list with 2,017 points.
The Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T is awarded annually to the men's and women's college basketball players of the year. The voting academy bases its criteria on player performance throughout the season. From March 3-17 the voting academy will select four finalists from this group.
