As part of the University of Louisville's Sustainability Week initiative last month, Student-Athletes Taking Action (SATA) hosted several WaterStep shoe drives at designated games and facilities. UofL Athletics collected 1,200 pounds of shoes over the course of the fall semester.
On Wednesday November 19, SATA partnered with the Engage Lead Serve Board (ELSB) and the Student Activities Board (SAB) to present to the community the Stepping Out for Safe H2O presentation. Those in attendance learned more about the clean water project and learned everything that U of L is doing to make a difference.
Donated shoes will support water projects in underdeveloped communities around the world, providing safe drinking water to those in need. In the world today, 780 million people lack access to clean water, a number that is close to triple the population of the United States as a whole.
WaterStep arranges for the donated shoes to be sold in the same developing countries where the water purification projects are happening so to contribute to microenterprise ventures benefiting the economy. For more information about WaterStep and their worldwide initiatives go to waterstep.org.
One of the co-founders of SATA, Erin Yenney from Women's Soccer said, "WaterStep is a powerful local organization that harnesses something as simple as our shoes to provide a necessity that improves all aspects of life and opportunity- clean water- and truly impacts lives. As student-athletes we know the importance of water. SATA is happy help in their vision and let people know how easy it is to change lives by donating shoes."
