Louisville Closes Fall with Strong Performances at Rivanna Romp

EARLYSVILLE, Va. - The Louisville rowing team earned a runner-up finish in the varsity eight event during Sunday's Rivanna Romp hosted by the University of Virginia.
In a regatta featuring crews from Clemson, Columbia, Duke, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and Old Dominion, the Cardinals "A" boat finished second in a field of 24 in the varsity eight competition with a time of 13:47.1 across the 4,000-meter course at Rivanna Reservoir. Virginia's "A" boat led the way with a time of 13:09.8, while Louisville's "B" crew was sixth overall at 14:00.7.
"It was really great to see the team come together and perform so well today," said Louisville head coach Derek Copeland. "It's nice to see the freshmen step up as they were in nearly every event. This young team has been preparing well for the spring and I think they're ready to push hard in the winter training segment of our season."
In the novice eight event, Louisville's "A" crew led the way with a time of 14:24.4 with Virginia in second at 15:27.1. The Cardinals were also third (15:28.5) and fourth (16:06.6). In the varsity four event, Louisville's "A" boat was fourth in the field of 37 crews with a time of 15:29.8. With Virginia in front with a time of 15:02.3, the Cardinals also finished 15th (16:07.0), 16th (16:07.3) and 21st (16:15.4).
Up next, the Cardinals will spend one additional week of fall training on the water before moving back inside. Louisville will return to the water for its annual winter training trip in Miami in preparation for the first event of the spring, the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational March 14-15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
